Remington Firearms

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Founded in 1816, Remington Arms is the oldest company in the United States that still makes its original product, firearms. ATAC TV Firearms programs feature many of Remington’s products in the instructional video programs. Remington also has claim to being the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America. Talk about stability, almost as old as the USA itself. This company is the largest United States producer of shotguns and rifles; in addition, Remington is the only company that produces both ammunition and firearms domestically. The products produced by Remington seem endless, and they are known for quality, reliable firearms and ammunition for the sporting, hunting and Law Enforcement industries. Remington products are distributed in over 60 countries giving it a wider base than any of its competitors. Handguns are not what Remington is noted for, as they have produced only a few different pistol models through the years. Remington has focused on long guns by producing many different rifle and shotgun types for hunters, sportsmen, LE and the Military.

SIG SAUER, Inc. SIG Pistols on ATAC TV Firearms

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Sig Sauer firearms are one of the most recognized weapons platform in the world. Because of the wide spread use and interest in SIG firearms, ATAC TV Firearms Channel began review and testing of some of their “flagship” products to produce instructional videos for the benefit of our viewers. The original SIG Company was created in 1853 and started building muskets for the Switzerland’s Federal Ministry of Defense out of a Swiss Wagon Factory. Today, Sig Sauer produces a vast array of firearms marketed through out the world, and is one of the largest firearms manufacturing entities on the globe. According to SIG Sauer, at least one-third of the United States Law Enforcement or Police use their firearms.

In 1985, SIG created an American branch and moved to Exeter, New Hampshire with new facilities to handle an initial large investment of manufacturing equipment. SIG Sauer has recently tripled its work force and invested huge sums of money in new state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and equipment to keep up with production orders. SIG continues to be recognized as the fastest growing firearms maker in the United States and is capturing a large portion of the firearms sales in this country.

Our focus today is the SIG Sauer P220 model produced in 9mm Parabellum, .45 ACP and 7.62 X 22mm. The most common caliber is the 9mm pistol. The P220 is a semi-automatic pistol and is the base platform from which the other models are built. The newer models include the P225, P226, P228 and P229. There are many variations of each model and SIG continues to develop and refine existing product for new markets. The P220 is an outstandingly successful design, and it and all the variations are in service in armed services, protection companies and police in many countries. The SIG P220 was developed for the Swiss Army as a replacement for the SIG P210 from World War II era. In 1975, Switzerland became the first nation to officially adopt the P220 in 9mm Parabellum for military use.

A Browning locked breech short-recoil design is utilized in the P220 similar to the 1911, Browning Hi-Power and the CZ-75 pistols. This is a very reliable action and proven through the years as rugged and strong. The frame is of a forged allow with a hard-anodised coating to protect it. Since the trigger action is Double Action/Single Action, the P220 incorporates a hammer-drop lever rear of the trigger on the left side of the pistol. This is the De-cocking lever. The SIG P220 has introduced a firing pin block safety, which is controlled by the trigger assembly. There is no external safety lever, only the De-cock lever and slide stop,

The SIG Sauer P220 is a robust, reliable, well-engineered handgun that continues to stand the test of time. With all the variants available there is a SIG pistol that is right for everyone. As with any product these days, you get what you pay for and you can’t go wrong with a high-quality production pistol from SIG Sauer, Inc. For instruction videos, keep an eye on ATAC TV Firearms Channel for more information coming soon.

Kahr Arms - ATAC TV Firearms Channel

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Kahr Arms produce compact and mid-sized semi-automatic pistols of ingenious design and forethought as a American small arms manufacturer with office headquarters in Blauvelt, New York. Founded in 1995 by Kook Jin “Justin” Moon, Kahr Arms offers small, well-made pistols built around some very powerful and popular cartridges such as 9mm Luger Parabellum, .40 S&W and .45 ACP for the self-protection buying public. ATAC TV Firearms Channel has tested and reviewed some of these “pocket cannons” due to their popularity and use as a concealed carry firearms platform.

The company, Kahr Arms was in a perfect position to produce viable carry guns for the American public immediately after the U.S Government ban “high-capacity” magazines of more than 10 rounds in 1994. Kahr would build a series of pistols for the gun owners that consist of small, slender and powerful handguns that proved to be very popular, especially to Americans that carry a concealed firearm.

These Kahr actions are designed using a Browning locked-breech design, which include a striker-operated firing pin and passive firing pin safety block. When the trigger is pressed, a double-lobed cocking cam rotates, pulling the striker back and the firing pin safety block is depressed and deactivated, eventually releasing the firing pin to strike the primer of the cartridge. The cocking cam is a single piece takes the place of more fragile and complicated designs of other pistol firing systems, in addition to the firing pin safety plunger located further to the rear of the slide to eliminate fouling from combustion gasses. Justin Moon has five patents owned and incorporated in the Kahr pistol design.

Similar to a double-action trigger system in a revolver, the Kahr has a short 3/8” trigger travel distance that aids in control of the firing process and is easy to learn. The initial Kahr K9, offered consumers a full-power 9mm Parabellum handgun that competed in physical size with the common small-sized pistols usually chambered in calibers such as the “pocket pistols” in .380 ACP, .32 ACP and even the little caliber guns in .22 LR.

Since the first K9 pistol, Kahr Arms produces other pistol configurations, in different calibers, such as polymer frames to lighten the weight. They also offer an economy line of pistols identical to the P series but without some of the high-end features to reduce cost to the consumer. None of these eliminated features affect the basic structure or reliability of the base pistol. Simple things to cut cost are used such as pinning the front sight, instead of cutting dovetails, engraving rather than more expensive “rolled-on” lettering, traditional rifled barrel rather than the original polygonal style, and including one magazine instead of two in the package. Short cuts that benefited the buying public, saving initial costs and allowing ownership of the basic model of Kahr pistols without affecting the performance and reliability of the pistol. Great idea Kahr!

Overall, these pistols are high-quality, rugged and reliable firearms. The perfect fit for concealed carry or deep-carry applications of the general public or Law Enforcement Officers back-up guns. The Kahr pistol lines incorporate small size, good caliber choices, and excellent design features make these pistols very desirable. ATAC TV Firearms Channel will be producing instructional videos on the use and deployment of these great handguns for concealed carry and back-up applications for LEO. Expect to see more innovation from Kahr Arms!

Venom Tactical Cotton Mouth Sniper Rifle

Monday, June 20th, 2011

It was springtime in the Arizona desert just North of Phoenix when I met the deadliest Cottonmouth a man had ever laid his eyes upon. I came upon the masterfully camouflaged serpent basking in the stifling sun. Forty-two inches in length with a striking distance of well beyond 1200 YDs. The snake I speak of is not the creature you worry of in the swamp; it is one bad piece of iron from Venom Tactical.

I had the pleasure of teaching Lenny Bolton owner of Venom Tactical. Lenny attended the sniper course with Mark Flinn a long time friend of his. Who had the exact same Cottonmouth rifle as Lenny did as they were both built identical and at the same time. The only difference between the two shooter’s equipment was their bullet weight. Lenny shooting HSM 175gr .308 and Mark utilizing Fed 168gr .308. The interesting fact was even though the shooters were using completely different brands and grains of ammunition both of them held the same exact DOPE out to 1375yds. Now the DOPE they had dialed at 1200yds without the use of a holdover was 60 MOA with a 20 inch barrel, typically with a REM 700 with a 24inch barrel the DOPE averages 75 MOA, if you have that on the top end to dial. So the ability to shoot that far without a use of a holdover and keep the center crosshair on target is an additional asset the Cottonmouth brings to the table. A technical facet to the Cottonmouth is the proprietary procedure in which the barrel and action are threaded and torqued to make cold bore shots a thing of the past .

Having personally seen and performed these actions with the Cottonmouth makes me a true believer that there are still some rifle builders out there who continue to focus on attention to detail, and quality craftsmanship.

Venom Tactical - Sniper rifles

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

Those who I personally know are aware that I only endorse products that I fully support. If the product is not good, I will let you know and explain why. If the product is OK, I will do the same. Now, if the product stands out above others and is a reliable choice then I speak up and that is what I am here to say about Venom Tactical Rifles, designed by Lenny Bolton.

Not always can you purchase a high end rifle without breaking your bank account. Being around firearms my entire life and working a variety of platforms, when it comes to long distance shooting with bolt action rifles, I always use the reliable Remington 700. With the great Remington name behind the product, parts for repair are readily accessible if needed. This rifle is a common choice among military, law enforcement and hunters alike. Venom Tactical has taken the receiver, and for that matter, basically the entire rifle and enhanced it by multiple degrees on many levels. Much like upgrading from a Mercedes to an AMG Mercedes or a Ford Mustang and stepping up to a Rouch Racing Edition Mustang. At Venom Tactical, Lenny Bolton makes you that custom rifle with the ability to still get parts. The accuracy is increased, not only by blueprinting the receiver, but also by adding a Venom Tactical Elliptical Bolt, Venom’s Spiralock Threaded stainless steel barrel and much more. Below is only a sample of some of the standard upgrades applied to all Venom Tactical Sniper Rifles, which come in .308 and 300WM calibers.

  • Venom Stock Upgrade: All Venom Rifles use a Pillar Bedded Manners Composite Stock with a Decelerator installed butt pad.
  • Venom Barrel Upgrade: Lenny Brux Stainless Barrel, and continues to apply his engineering skills. Being chambered to Match Spec and .001 Headspace, 18inch - 24inch length options. Threaded Muzzle with end cap, optional.
  • Venom Receiver / Bolt Components: Venom Elliptical Bolt, Handle, Knob, Firing Pin and Recoil Lug
  • Venom Optics Platform Upgrade:  All Venom Rifles include a Badger Ordinance, One piece, 20 MOA Scope Mount on all the Venom Rifles.
  • Venom Bottom Metal Upgrade:  Badger Ordinance M5 Trigger Guard and an Accuracy International detachable 5 round magazine.
  • Venom Finish and Paint Upgrade:  Cerakote/DuraCoat, this is a great base and if needed, can be camouflaged to your desired look and needs.

One of my personal favorite is Venom Tactical’s Cottonmouth Rifle. When the day came to break in and zero my rifle, we started off with the same DOPE (Data on Personal Equipment) as two other Venom Cottonmouth Rifles had logged, which did not change from 100yds to 1,000+yds. while firing Federal Gold Match 168gr.  An amazing testament to Lenny Bolton being a master engineer with a extremely high skill set in multiple firearm platforms.

Take a look at the rifles designed by Lenny Bolton of Venom Tactical.

T&E - Venom Tactical Cottonmouth

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Firearms built to be used, as “Sniper Rifles” require much research and product testing to be considered for any important mission. The Venom Tactical custom Cottonmouth has earned its reputation as reliable, robust and extremely accurate precision sniper rifle worthy of consideration by any shooter that delivers lead at long distance. With designs and forethought, Lenny Bolton is building sniper rifles that exceed accuracy and handling expectations of the most experienced snipers. This is a “custom” rifle. You can order a rifle build to exactly the specifications of your desires in a sniper rifle.
The rifle tested is chambered in .308 with the recommendation from Venom that only Federal Gold Match 168/175gr ammunition be used exclusively. The chamber reamer is a custom made design for this factory ammunition. Once a stock Remington receiver is mounted in a custom jig, truing, threading and cuts in the lathe are made without disturbing the initial alignment. This insures the bolt; firing pin, receiver and barrel are in perfect alignment. The end result of the machining process constitutes the major difference between Venom’s rifle building process and what other manufacturers normally do by simply facing the receiver and bolt lugs to improve alignment. The design and meticulous machining skills by Lenny are far superior to what other rifle builders consider being “good enough”. Spend some time researching on the Venom Tactical website exploring the specific techniques involved in the production of these fantastic shooting rifles. It all comes down to repeatability from shot to shot and this rifle has shot ¼ inch groups or less.

There are many innovative designs included in the production of the Venom/Lenny Bolton rifles that exists only in his custom firearms. It all starts out with the line-bored Remington receiver and custom elliptical bolt that locks up in the front /back of the receiver for perfect alignment with the barrel. Custom built firing pin also in alignment with the bore line and receiver. Barrel facing and the bolt lugs are machined in perfect alignment and perpendicular to the bolt centerline. Lenny uses a Brux Stainless barrel with a custom twist rate and taper. More notable parts in every rifle build are Badger Ordinance bottom metal M5 trigger guard, AI magazines, Remington trigger set to approx 3 lbs and a Manners T3 pillar bedded stock with 1 inch decelerator pad. You have a choice of Cerakote or DuraCoat finish on the rifle, in any color or combinations. The fit and finish is unparalleled. Custom IS custom, so make it your own. Many options are available for each model of Lenny’s custom guns.

At the range, the first 5 cartridges fired from this Cottonmouth grouped inside .30 thousandth of an inch. This was a great start, but it was consistent through the entire day of shooting. Later in the afternoon, the wind picked up and the worst group of the day turned into a 5 shot string that measured at just under 1/2 of an inch. Great shooting firearm and defiantly a cut above the rest, when it comes to sniper rifles. Doped the rifle out to 1200 yards with first and second round center hits in the wind. Venom Tactical has earned and deserved to be the dedicated sniper rifle for ATAC Staff.

Sequence Of Shooting Part 5 of 5: Follow Through

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

This is the final stage of the Sequence of Shooting. You should have reviewed the first four parts and are ready to deliver the shot on target. Lenny Bolton and Tom Clarke describe the importance of the Follow Through to complete the process that will help you hit the target, if all other factors are right.

Part 5 of the Sequence of shooting discusses Follow Through. This is wear many shooters commonly mess up a perfect shooting sequence. Follow through is what is performed after the trigger is pressed. We have to understand that the bullet is sitting happily atop the cartridge, in the chamber of the rifle at the moment the trigger is pressed. When the trigger breaks the sear disengages the firing pin. The firing sequence is released and spring tension propels the firing pin forward overcoming the inertial weight of the pin. The firing pin hits the primer of the cartridge and the primer ignites the powder charge. Expansion of gases takes place. When the pressure inside the cartridge overcomes the interference fit between the cartridge neck and the bullet, the bullet starts its journey down the barrel of the rifle. This is referred to as internal ballistics. We have to remember the bullet is being accelerated from a standing start.

Although this all seems to happen in a short period of time, there is still plenty of time to screw up this process by the upsetting the shooting platform before the bullet leaves the barrel. Flinching is one of the main causes of poor follow through. Plenty of dry practice is just what the doctor orders to insure perfect follow through. It is essential with precision shooting to be able to call the shot each and every time the trigger is pressed. This means calling out the precise location of the riflescope crosshairs at the moment the trigger is pressed. Telling your spotter where the crosshair was the moment the shot broke allows him to give you corrections to the target. This is discussed in another program called Shooter/Spotter Communications. Watch the video below as Tom and Lenny express the importance of combining all the elements in the Sequence of Shooting to improve your skills with your sniper rifle.
