Viewer’s Firearm Question: Will a Plastic Gun get through X-ray?

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

ATAC Firearm Reply and Answer:

This is a great question, with a very clear answer. NO! The gun will not get through an X-ray undetected. And, taking the answer one step further: DO NOT TRY IT. Tom Clarke and Lenny Bolton with ATAC TV Firearm’s Q&A address this important question with a serious warning for those traveling with firearms.

First of all it is illegal to carry a concealed firearm or weapon through an X-ray machine, whether it is in an airport or any other government building, without permission from the proper authorities. This question specifically refers to carrying a Glock or similer type handgun through airport security. Tom Clarke make is very clear: Just because the gun (Glock, Springfield, etc.) is plastic or polymer, does not mean you can sneak it through security. Nor does it give you the permission to sneak it through security.

Lenny Bolton also emphasizes the gun Will show up in the X-Ray image. Plain as day, the entire outline of the firearm, including the trigger guard, will show up in the monitor. Even if you separate the metal slide, it will still show up.

There is a correct way to travel with your firearm. Laws are always changing over time. For example, in reference to airline security, you can always call or check online with TSA (http://www.tsa.gov/) and ask about procedures for traveling with your firearm. It is important to also check the laws of your destination because laws are different from state to state, or country to country. Look into the proper protocol for your travel. If you’re declaring a firearm, you may have to sign a statement that your firearm is cleared out and properly stored. It is very important to communicate with TSA and airport officials in this case!

Straight to the point: Just don’t do it. It’s not going to work. Follow the firearms laws, which are put in place to protect everyone. It is illegal and the penalties are pretty severe.

The ATAC Staff appreciates your great questions! Keep them coming!

What is an Accidental Discharge?

Viewer’s Firearm Question:  What is an Accidental Discharge?

ATAC Firearm Reply and Answer:

We are talking about FIREARM SAFETY!  Tom Clarke and Mark Flinn with ATAC TV discuss accidental or negligent discharge of a firearm.  This is a BIG deal.  As firearm owners and instructors, we live and breath the four standard firearm safety rules.

ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED!

  • Treat all firearms as if they are loaded, even when you have checked and are sure it is in fact, unloaded.

NEVER POINT THE MUZZLE AT ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY!

  • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction while handling the firearm.

KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON TARGET!

  • Keep your finger on the side of the frame or reference point out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until you have made the decision to shoot.

KNOW WHAT IS BEHIND AND IN FRONT OF YOUR TARGET!

  • You need to be aware of what is behind the target, what might be between you and the target, or what could move into that area.  You OWN each bullet you send downrange, so know where that bullet is headed.  Once you press the trigger and the bullet is launched it can’t not be called back.

Ok, Negligent discharge means you caused the firearm to fire when you had not intended for it to discharge.  The firearm will not normally go off by itself.  Someone (you) managed to pull the trigger without intending to fire.  Bad deal!

Accidental discharge is a firearm that malfunctions due to internal parts, dropped, or otherwise fires without pulling the trigger. This accident could be caused by worn parts and/or a host of other issues that cause this firearm to fire without cause.  This is not something you can control until it happens, but with proper inspection of the parts during cleaning, its possible to find problems before it becomes an issue.  If this happens, stop using the firearm, clear out any ammunition and take it to a Gunsmith for repair.  Watch Tom and Mark in this short video as they discuss the topic.

What is the Difference Between a Machine Gun and Submachine Gun?

Viewer Firearm Question: What is the Difference Between a Machine Gun and Submachine Gun?

ATAC Firearm Reply and Answer:

Tom Clarke and Mark Flinn with ATAC TV answer a viewers question about machineguns and Sub guns. Of course there are many different styles and manufacturers of these types of guns from all over the world. Most all were born and designed for the Military and/or Law Enforcement use.

Rifles cartridges shoot in machine guns and pistol cartridges are used in subguns. This is a simple and easy explanation for such a complex variety of weapons platforms. Without getting into a vast array of discussion about specific types and sizes of firearms, this is the generally excepted “rule of thumb” to classify the difference between the two.

Each has definite purposes intended for use in many different environments and situations. Sub guns are great for LE officers that may be in residential buildings where over penetration might cause hazard and liability for the Department, as an example. Sub guns have a limited range depending on caliber, but are very effective in close quarter battle situations.

Rifle caliber machine guns are more powerful, with long-range capabilities and can be small compact firearms such as an AK-74U, or as large as crew-served machine guns like the M2 HB .50 machine gun that weighs 120+ pounds just for the gun. Big and small, machine guns are generally described as “machine guns” if they shoot a standard rifle type cartridge. Tom and Mark give you the quick discussion on the ATAC TV Video program linked below.

Why Should I Underload my Magazines?

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Viewers Firearm Question: Why Should I Underload my Magazines?

ATAC Firearm Reply and Answer:

When guys like Tom Clarke and Lenny Bolton tell most people they should under load their magazines, they wonder “how come?” If the magazine holds 15, why on earth would you short yourself a round or two by not filling it up? There are a few valid reasons to avoid topping off that magazine.

There is just so much room inside the magazine body and if loaded to capacity, once the last cartridge loaded under the feed lips, the spring, follower and cartridges are tight with little room to move around inside the body. Insert this magazine into a firearm with its bolt closed and the top cartridge will hit the bottom of the bolt. If the cartridge can not move down slightly into the body, there is a strong possibility that you will not get the magazine seated correctly into the magazine well. Guess what? You will induce a malfunction, or worse, the magazine will fall out and you will end up with an empty firearm.

Another good reason to under load your magazines depends on the type and quality of the spring inside the body. Fully loaded, the spring is compressed to its limit in the bottom of the body. If left in this condition, depending on the type of spring, it could rapidly lose its flexibility and create malfunctions. A better technique is to leave some room for the spring to retain its shape, and allowing the follower and cartridges to move inside the magazine when loaded into a mag well against a bolt, will give you the best of both worlds. Reliable magazines and the ability to load into your firearm without thought of the condition or readiness of the firearm. For more details on this subject, watch the video program linked below so Tom and Lenny can explain in more detail.

Purple Heart Gun awarded to Sgt. Plybon

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Happy Fourth of July to the United States and thanks to all those who serve our country.

A special Dedication to Todd Plybon & “Team Taylor” for protecting our country.

In mid-2008, our unit and other units were approached for volunteers for a XXXXXX mission into Afghanistan in 2009.  Not shockingly, about 10 guys from my unit volunteered.

The same 10 who were known in the unit for their dedication to training and learning.  Todd was one of this group, as was I.  We have come to call ourselves “Team Taylor”, after the city that our original armory and unit is based out of, in Taylor, Texas.

We were hassled about “jumping ship” to this XXXXXXX unit, to a fault; a long story short, our commander blocked our transfers at first, and this put Todd in a financial bind; he relented while we later found a way to stay with the Intelligence unit.  Because of Todd’s talent for diverse skill-sets, he found a very one-of-a-kind position as a XXXXXX Team that was deploying to Afghanistan at the same time that we were.  Todd would not let his friends go off to war without him.

The IED strike that killed 2 of our friends on October 16th.  Todd was gunning on the roof turret of their armored humvee when the blast under their truck blew the roof of the truck, with Todd still in it, completely off. This saved his life, as the driver and truck commander, Todd’s fellow crewmen, were instantly killed. Todd was pinned under the several thousand-pound armored roof as he and it landed on what was left of the road.  It would have killed him where he lay if his comrades had not treated him quickly. Todd was as close or closer to an apocalyptic blast than anyone still walking this earth.

Our group has seen many awards given out over the years, mock Kabar knives and tomahawks on plaques given by one general to another.  We wanted something for Todd that would be as functional and lethal as he is, while still serving as a long-lasting symbol that honors Todd’s sacrifice, to remind Todd that he is a lion and a warrior that we love and are honored to share company with.

Team Taylor conceived this project and contributed to it financially; Rifle Dynamics leapt at the very idea of the project, and has also contributed substantially to it, as has XS Sights, who donated a set of their sights to the rifle as soon as they heard of the project.

Since 2007, a small group of about 10 guys from our National Guard unit have gotten together to train on our own time, on our own dime.  We bought our own AR-15s and ammo, arranged force-on-force exercises with paintball guns, and sought out training from outside of the military training system to better ourselves and prepare for future missions in the Global War on Terror.

Please take the time to read the below story, a sad but also a wonderful story of true “Brothers in Arms”.

Cheap milled AK on the market to avoid

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Folks
At ATAC TV we have always tried to offer advice to the shooting community that we thought would be helpful to keep people from wasting money on shit products. Mark Flinn, Tom Clarke and myself have spent a lot of money and time on products that are available as so called upgrades to your fighting weapons. I have been getting a lot of questions about some of the cheaper AK’s on the market. I have tried to stay away from slamming certain guns and focused on offering advice on cheaper guns that were good but just needed work. Yes I’m in the business of fixing guns so you can say that my actions are somewhat self serving. Honestly I know that a lot of folks cannot afford some of the high end AK’s on the market so offering advice on which of the cheaper guns have merit I see as a public service.
I have not singled out many guns that I consider unacceptable until now.
We got in a new gun this past week, a Polish kit built on a new US milled receiver with a new US barrel. The manufacturer name on the receiver was American Tactical. At first sight I thought it was a decent looking gun. I’m not a fan of milled guns but this one looked good.
First thing we do with any budget gun is check the headspace and this one was to loose. Normally an easy thing to fix. I went to remove the barrel pin and notice it was way to loose. We normally remove these pins with a 12 ton press but I was able to knock the pin out with a small punch and an 8 ounce hammer. If that wasn’t bad enough after the pin was removed the barrel literally fell out of the receiver, again barrels are normally a pressed in fit. This US made barrel was about 12 thousandths to small to fit properly. The receiver measured out to the right size (23mm) but the barrel was way undersize. Not only is this bad specs in the parts but anybody that assembled that gun and thought it was even safe either knows nothing about what they are doing or they are money hungry POS’s that should not be in the industry.

I offer this as advice on what to avoid, there are a lot of inexpensive guns out there that can serve you well but I would avoid this perticular gun like the plague.

ATAC TV Rappelling: Intro to Anchors

Knowing and understanding what an acceptable anchor is and the different types of anchors, is a good start to setting up a safe and reliable rappel system.  Glenn Justice talks about Anchors used in Rappelling. Using 3 different types of anchor systems, BFT, BFR, and Structural.

  • BFT are those trees that are 6inches in diameter, green and growing with no erosion at the roots.
  • BFR are those rocks that are the size of a small car.
  • Structural are the man made buildings that are large and non movable.
