Firearms built to be used, as “Sniper Rifles” require much research and product testing to be considered for any important mission. The Venom Tactical custom Cottonmouth has earned its reputation as reliable, robust and extremely accurate precision sniper rifle worthy of consideration by any shooter that delivers lead at long distance. With designs and forethought, Lenny Bolton is building sniper rifles that exceed accuracy and handling expectations of the most experienced snipers. This is a “custom” rifle. The rifle tested is chambered in .308 with the recommendation from Venom that only Federal Gold Match 168/175gr ammunition be used exclusively. The chamber reamer is a custom made design for this factory ammunition. Once a stock Remington receiver is mounted in a custom jig, truing, threading and cuts in the lathe are made without disturbing the initial alignment. This insures the bolt; firing pin, receiver and barrel are in perfect alignment. The end result of the machining process constitutes the major difference between Venom’s rifle building process and what other manufacturers normally do by simply facing the receiver and bolt lugs to improve alignment. The design and meticulous machining skills by Lenny are far superior to what other rifle builders consider being “good enough”. Spend some time researching on the Venom Tactical website exploring the specific techniques involved in the production of these fantastic shooting rifles. It all comes down to repeatability from shot to shot and this rifle has shot ¼ inch groups or less.

There are many innovative designs included in the production of the Venom/Lenny Bolton rifles that exists only in his custom firearms. It all starts out with the line-bored Remington receiver and custom elliptical bolt that locks up in the front /back of the receiver for perfect alignment with the barrel. Custom built firing pin also in alignment with the bore line and receiver. Barrel facing and the bolt lugs are machined in perfect alignment and perpendicular to the bolt centerline. Lenny uses a Brux Stainless barrel with a custom twist rate and taper. More notable parts in every rifle build are Badger Ordinance bottom metal M5 trigger guard, AI magazines, Remington trigger set to approx 3 lbs and a Manners T3 pillar bedded stock with 1 inch decelerator pad. You have a choice of Cerakote or DuraCoat finish on the rifle, in any color or combinations. The fit and finish is unparalleled. Custom IS custom, so make it your own. Many options are available for each model of Lenny’s custom guns.

At the range, the first 5 cartridges fired from this Cottonmouth grouped inside .30 thousandth of an inch. This was a great start, but it was consistent through the entire day of shooting. Later in the afternoon, the wind picked up and the worst group of the day turned into a 5 shot string that measured at just under 1/2 of an inch. Great shooting firearm and defiantly a cut above the rest, when it comes to sniper rifles. Doped the rifle out to 1200 yards with first and second round center hits in the wind. Venom Tactical has earned and deserved to be the dedicated sniper rifle for ATAC Staff.

Click with no Bang?  Failure to Fire, finger straight, rack the slide of your Remington 870 shotgun as you roll it over on the ejection port, back on the sights and target!

All firearms platforms can suffer from failure to fire. Here is a quick list of possible causes of this malfunction.

• Loaded the shotgun magazine and did not rack a shot shell into the chamber, or check the chamber to make sure that you did load it.
  
• Bad primer of a shot shell in the chamber, the shell did not go off when the trigger was pulled and the firing pin struck the primer. (Bad primer or shell)
  
• You shot the firearm empty.  This is common with a low capacity pump shotgun and having to continue firing without the time to tactical reload. (Gun empty, see Combat Reload program)
  
• Your shotgun is broken.  Firing pin is broken, some other parts have failed and non-repairable in the field.  Immediately do a transition to back-up firearm such as your pistol.

Ok, there are several reasons this will happen, but the remedy to each situation is the same.  Trigger finger goes straight on frame, rack the slide while rolling the gun on ejection port to help remove any shot shell that might happen to be in the chamber, close slide as you get back on the sights and target.  Simple but must be practiced to react with the first sign of this issue, a click.

If the 870 shotgun is empty, you will get a second click.  Your reaction to the second click is to rack the slide to the rear leaving the bolt back and ejection port open, access a spare shot shell and drop it into the ejection port, close the slide and shoot.  For the description of the Combat Reload, go to ATAC TV Firearms Channel and learn how to load your shotgun in a hurry.

Robert Drysdale and Sean Rigo on ATACTV MMA Channel are sharing some techniques with different options from the guard.  The guys are doing this stuff wearing Gi’s and this is another choke using the collar as an aid to cut off the air from your opponent.

First, Robert breaks Sean’s posture, pulling him onto himself and gets the overhook and a grip on the collar. This grip in not deep enough to choke the opponent but does secure the position.  The other hand can go over or under the head, but the blade of the forearm has to end up under Sean’s chin on the neck.  Robert shrimps to the side and brings their face to the mat.  Rolling the forearm on the neck with bring a quick tap out.  Rob and Sean point out many tips and tricks to accomplish this maneuver and must be practiced to be effective.

A special Dedication to Todd Plybon & “Team Taylor” for protecting our country.

In mid-2008, our unit and other units were approached for volunteers for a XXXXXX mission into Afghanistan in 2009.  Not shockingly, about 10 guys from my unit volunteered.

The same 10 who were known in the unit for their dedication to training and learning.  Todd was one of this group, as was I.  We have come to call ourselves “Team Taylor”, after the city that our original armory and unit is based out of, in Taylor, Texas.

We were hassled about “jumping ship” to this XXXXXXX unit, to a fault; a long story short, our commander blocked our transfers at first, and this put Todd in a financial bind; he relented while we later found a way to stay with the Intelligence unit.  Because of Todd’s talent for diverse skill-sets, he found a very one-of-a-kind position as a XXXXXX Team that was deploying to Afghanistan at the same time that we were.  Todd would not let his friends go off to war without him.

The IED strike that killed 2 of our friends on October 16^th.  Todd was gunning on the roof turret of their armored humvee when the blast under their truck blew the roof of the truck, with Todd still in it, completely off. This saved his life, as the driver and truck commander, Todd’s fellow crewmen, were instantly killed. Todd was pinned under the several thousand-pound armored roof as he and it landed on what was left of the road.  It would have killed him where he lay if his comrades had not treated him quickly. Todd was as close or closer to an apocalyptic blast than anyone still walking this earth. 

Our group has seen many awards given out over the years, mock Kabar knives and tomahawks on plaques given by one general to another.  We wanted something for Todd that would be as functional and lethal as he is, while still serving as a long-lasting symbol that honors Todd’s sacrifice, to remind Todd that he is a lion and a warrior that we love and are honored to share company with.

Team Taylor conceived this project and contributed to it financially; Rifle Dynamics leapt at the very idea of the project, and has also contributed substantially to it, as has XS Sights, who donated a set of their sights to the rifle as soon as they heard of the project.

Since 2007, a small group of about 10 guys from our National Guard unit have gotten together to train on our own time, on our own dime.  We bought our own AR-15s and ammo, arranged force-on-force exercises with paintball guns, and sought out training from outside of the military training system to better ourselves and prepare for future missions in the Global War on Terror.
